ROCK SET IN STONE AT PALMS

No, really: The Game Plan took in nearly $150 million. (Photo by Erik Kabik)

On Sunday, Dwayne Johnson — better known by his nom de tights The Rock — was given a star at The Palms’ Brenden Theaters by owner Johnny Brenden, along with a $2,500 check for The Rock Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery struggle to recover from the critical barbs that struck during their 1996 Michael Bay-led ‘splosion-fest. Or perhaps it’s to help promote physical fitness among children. We’re not sure.

Johnson, who is filming Race to Witch Mountain in town, also attended the premiere of Get Smart, which held a charity screening at Planet Hollywood Resort. Johnson plays the critical role of Steve Carell’s shoe phone.

0530FRI: THE ROUNDUP

We have nothing else to add. (Via HBO.com)

That sound you hear is a city full of ovaries buzzing for the Sex and the City movie premiere. (We still can’t stop laughing over Rex Reed’s assessment, “They’re not angels, but they’re still here, working hard to please their fans, like plow donkeys wearing lipstick.”) What better way to celebrate this series written by the insipid for the shallow than with movie event tie-ins?

Blackbook702 hosts a party starting at 6:45 p.m. at The Palms’ Brenden Theaters featuring offerings from The Cupcakery, Escada, Jimmy Choo and serves up Las Vegas Vodka Cosmopolitans. Tickets are even tax-deductible as the evening benefits The Public Education Foundation. Dos Caminos inside The Palazzo, meanwhile, offers a four-cocktail flight where each drink corresponds to one of the characters. Try to guess which beverage makes you the slutty, old one.*

If you’re one of the unfortunate dudes dragged along to this interminable shrieking henfest of a film, we recommend quietly slitting your wrists before the third act. If you have a pair and refused to go along, read on for your options. Events at 10 p.m. unless noted. Click for more words and pictures »

CINEVEGAS ANNOUNCES LINEUP

Bijou Phillips in Dark Streets, which appears to be Busby Berkeley’s worst nightmare.

The lineup has been announced for the Tenth Annual Cinevegas, held June 12-21 at The Palms’ Brenden Theaters and accompanying hotspots. Kicking off the festival is The Rocker, from director Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) starring Rainn Wilson (The Office) and Christina Applegate (Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead).

Closing the festival is The Great Buck Howard starring John Malkovich, Colin Hanks and his father. You know, the guy from Bosom Buddies.

In-between, the festival will offer a slew of premieres, like Bijou Phillips’ period piece Dark Streets, documentaries, including Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong, indie flicks, including the latest Chuck Palahniuk adaptation, Choke, a Hunter S. Thompson doc, shorts, specials by Nevada filmmakers and a series of cult faves shown at midnight. For the full rundown, visit the official site.

DEAL OR NO DEAL?

It’s still got to be better than Love Actually, right? (Photos by Scott Harrison)

Another week, another movie premiere. After 88 Minutes debuted at Planet Hollywood Resort last Wednesday, last night saw Deal make its way onto the silver screen at The Palms’ Brenden Theaters with Shannon Elizabeth, Mimi Rogers and Efren Ramirez in attendance.

The film shares something else with 88 Minutes — sagging reviews. Says Mark Olsen of the LA Times:

Reynolds doesn’t convey any of the lightning bolt insouciance that made him arguably the greatest movie star of the ’70s and ’80s (really) but rather just stands there. There are literally endless shots of him standing around, wearing sunglasses and looking vaguely wizened and suspiciously tight in the face. The direction by Gil Cates Jr. is inept at best, and the script by Cates and Marc Weinstock seems to operate under the assumption that trafficking in flabby clichés — the kindly call girl, the scrappy youngster, the angry dad — will somehow smooth over the underdeveloped characters.
