LAS VEGAS FILM FESTIVAL TAKES SPOTLIGHT

Not to be confused with Dio biopic Holy Diver. Tagline: This summer, ride the TIE-gah!

The Las Vegas Film Festival has June all to itself.

With CineVegas — and what a grim week it’s been for that festival, with the death of Dennis Hopper — on hiatus until no-one-knows-when, the third-year LVFF has the chance to build into CV’s successor.

It starts this year with Holy Rollers, a Sundance entrant produced by The Bank managing partner Danny A. Abeckaser Friday at 7 p.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton. There’s name recognition in the flick, with Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland), Justin Bartha (The Hangover) and former Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip. It’s based on the true story of Hasidic Jews in the ’90s smuggling ecstasy into the United States. Because, wait, what? How is this a serious drama and not an action-comedy? Can we get in on the development of the sequel starring Adam Sandler and the guy who played Larry Gopnik in A Serious Man?

The other big feature is Once Fallen, with Ed Harris (Glengarry Glen Ross) and Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). The fest also boasts six blocks of shorts — including contributions from UNLV and CSN students — and documentaries, including Billy Bob Thornton’s My Run, Quantum Tamers about Stephen Hawking, and Stripped, Greg Freidler’s collection of naked Las Vegans. (Woohoo!)

The opening party is at The Artisan Friday night at 9:30 p.m., with a pool party at Simon Saturday night and a closing night awards ceremony Sunday at the Hilton. Tickets are $7.00 for individual screenings and $25.00 for a five-film mini pass. All-day film passes are $50.00 and an all-access pass is $100.00.
