EYE CAME, EYE SAW, EYECANDY
I have to say, I am honestly impressed with Mandalay Bay’s new “sound lounge,” eyecandy. Of course, anything would be better than its predecessor, the tropical-themed Island Lounge (or whatever it was called) that featured bad cover bands and attracted … well, no one particularly worth attracting. So MGM/MIRAGE scrapped it and built a door-less ultralounge, and the result is somewhat like the Hard Rock’s Circle Bar meets MGM Grand’s Tabu with a little Pure flavor and disco feeling thrown in.
Eyecandy features two bars, a cute little lit-tile dance floor, a variety of seating options–on the dance floor, in curtained side wings and at cocktail tables exposed to the casino floor–live music and DJs and interactive tables where you can plug in your iPod to engage in “DJ battles.”
Last night, Racket and Ty Ku hosted an open bar and party featuring DJ Craze and MC Killa Kela. It was pretty cool. The opening DJ (forgive me for not knowing his name) warmed up the growing crowd with an interesting mix of Latin, house and hip-hop, and by 10 p.m. the dance floor looked something like a scene from “Dancing With the Stars.”
However, by the time Killa Kela was turned loose on the microphone to dazzle with his beatboxing and Craze manned the turntables with the fury you’d expect from a three-time world DMC champ, the place was packed, the dance floor filled with krumpers, b-boys and just people plain ol’ shaking their groove things.
